If you are considering purchasing a new home in Daybreak and intend to enroll your children in public school, it’s very likely based on current school boundaries that your child would attend Eastlake Elementary. Located in Eastlake Village, Eastlake Elementary has a unique two-story design with large windows in every classroom, collaboration kivas, a beautiful media center, a spacious gym with stage area, and computer lab with the latest technology. The school is situated adjacent to a large park with vast play areas and facilities for soccer, tennis, basketball and swimming. When designing the Eastlake neighborhood, the school was centrally located so that as many children as possible could walk to school eliminating the need for parents to drive their children to school, and reducing strain on the district’s bus program.

Led by Principal Jan Tanner, Eastlake Elementary has three areas of focus of Literacy, Numeracy and Arts Integration with opportunities in Choir, Orchestra and Meet the Masters, an Art Education Program which is put on largely with the help of parent volunteers. Meet the Masters is taught through school multi-media assemblies where students are introduced to master artists through interesting stories, facts and virtual museums. Back in the classrooms, students learn and practice the techniques through self-guided pencil-on paper worksheets and a final art project reflecting the same medium, style or subject matter as the master artist.

The elementary school supports Leader in Me, a character education program that creates a common language within the school-wide community based upon Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Through Leader in Me, students develop life skills and self-confidence to succeed in school, at home and in their chosen careers in the future. The program is gaining recognition in schools across the United States and in countries around the world.

Through radKIDS® Personal Empowerment Safety Education Program, students and their parents acquire knowledge, skills and power to protect themselves from violence and harm. The program covers topics such as home, school and vehicle safety, realistic defense against abduction, appropriate touch and the self-realization of personal power.

Eastlake Elementary is one of eight schools in the Jordan School District offering a dual language immersion program in Mandarin Chinese. The new program is currently offered in first grade and will roll out into additional grade levels consecutively through the sixth grade. Students who are accepted into the immersion program are instructed using a 50/50 model where half the day is taught in Chinese and the other half in English. Entrance into the language immersion program is granted by application and lottery.

Serving 1,070 students from kindergarten to sixth grade, Eastlake Elementary is a traditional public school and part of the Jordan School District. The elementary school offers a year-round education based on the 45-15 plan with summer vacation for all tracks in July. The school day begins at 8:30 am and is dismissed at 3:25 pm Monday thru Thursday. Students are released at 1:25 pm each Friday, allowing time for teacher collaboration and class preparation. School lunch is offered daily and National School Lunch benefits are available to those who qualify. Visitors are welcome and are required to check in at the office upon arrival.

Well, plenty. And the details might surprise you. Daybreak currently has two elementary schools and one K-9 charter school located within the community—Daybreak Elementary, Eastlake Elementary and Early Light Academy. This is the first in a series of posts that will feature each of the schools in Daybreak.

Daybreak Elementary School, located in Founder’s Park Village, is one of the first elementary schools in Utah with an attached recreation center and was designed to be environmentally efficient with geo-thermal heating and cooling which is also good for the budget. The building’s contemporary design provides an abundance of natural lighting which is an essential component for productive learning. The award winning facility has a LEED silver rating and was honored at the Governors Quality Growth Awards program in 2010.

Led by Principal Doree Strauss, Daybreak Elementary has a curricular focus in Literacy, Writing and Language Arts. Technology is safely used as a tool for instruction. Each student at the school creates a profile through the Renzulli Learning System, an online program that aligns individual interests, learning styles and expression styles with a wealth of activities that promote creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students have access to the program during school as well as at home for enrichment activities and independent study.

Daybreak Elementary participates in the nationally-recognized character education program, Community of Caring, founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Community of Caring emphasizes the ethical values of Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Family. The renowned program has been adopted by more than 1,000 schools throughout the United States and in Canada.

In partnership with Junior Achievement of Utah, Daybreak Elementary is striving to provide their students with a better understanding of economics and a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system. Daybreak students will join over 60,000 students across the state in activities that will teach them how to effectively manage their finances, apply free-market thinking and prepare them for life after graduation. Daybreak Elementary hosts the annual Science Fair for the Jordan School District held in February and is currently organizing the first Math Olympiad for several schools in the district and neighboring charter schools.

At Daybreak, education plays a vital role in the community’s design. A recent study performed by the University of Utah showed that 88 percent of fifth grade students at Daybreak Elementary School walk to school at least once per week compared with 17 percent of students at another school located in a nearby conventional suburban neighborhood. Walkable neighborhoods not only keep cars off the road and save time for parents, but also help children start down a path towards healthy living from a young age.

Serving 1,100 students from kindergarten to sixth grade, Daybreak Elementary, a traditional public school and part of the Jordan School District, offers a year-round education using the 45-15 plan (each track is in session for 45 days followed by 15 days of vacation) with summer vacation for all tracks in July. School begins at 8:30 am and ends at 3:25 pm Monday thru Thursday. Students are released at 1:25 pm each Friday to allow for class preparation and teacher collaboration.
Truly, resistance is futile when you see the neat rows of raspberry Danish, éclairs and fresh croissants hand-rolled through the night by a European-trained pastry chef. As owner Amberleigh Farrell sighs, “A ham and cheese croissant should be what a girl eats every morning. Authentic and European — crunchy on the outside, flaky on the inside.”

Although their colleague takes care of the night shift, Amberleigh and co-owner, Debi Jensen, are responsible for all the other exquisite goodies at Swirly Girls. Each hour is a sweet revelation, as an ever-changing menu of deliciousness pops out warm from the oven: cookies, cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls. And don’t forget the cake truffles, wondrous bite-sized cakes dipped in exquisite French Valrhona chocolate.

Happily manning the ovens each day, Debi and Amberleigh are living the dream. “For 15 years I said ‘I’m going to open a bakery,’” recalls Debi, a 25-year sales and management veteran in the bakery industry. She found an eager partner in Amberleigh, whose own foodie background includes event planning and hotel catering sales. After these across-the-street neighbors put together the food and decorations for a relative’s wedding, they were sure they’d be great partners.

As Daybreak residents, they knew SoDa Row was the perfect location. “Daybreak is such a unique community,” says Amberleigh. “It’s so fun being the neighborhood bakery. People come in to hang out, read the paper and have their morning croissant and coffee. Everyone wants us to do well.” In fact, hardly a day goes by without serving breakfast to employees at the software company upstairs, and catering lunches for other Daybreak businesses has picked up too. In contrast with a strip mall location, Amberleigh says, “Our customers are our neighbors. We’re close and convenient, so they can walk or bike over to justify the peanut butter cheesecake brownie they’re about to eat.” Or the caramel sticky buns. Or the white chocolate almond raspberry bars — all favorites on this duo’s evolving menu. “We’re always inventing new treats for the shop,” says Amberleigh with glee. “And we can because we own it!”

When we set out to make a TV commercial for Daybreak we thought, ”what’s the best way to show people what every day life here is like”? As we thought about it a bit, the answer came pretty easily. So, we put out a call for submissions to Daybreak residents and just asked them to show us what they loved most about living here by sharing their home movies. We got lots of submissions. Some of it was beautiful. Some of it was touching. Some of it was downright hilarious. But all of it was real, and that’s what we wanted.

Jenny and Steve Bauman were among those whose clips made it into the commercial. The Baumans purchased their first home in Daybreak in 2008. They were so excited about their very first home, they snapped photos throughout the building process. They then turned the photos into a time-lapse video, which ended up being a key element of the commercial.

“I just wanted to get every stage of construction because I knew that it would be fun to go back later on in life and look at it,” said Jenny. Asked why the Baumans decided to build their new home in Daybreak, she added, “I always loved the architecture of the older neighborhoods in Salt Lake, but I didn’t want to deal with the baggage that comes with an older home. Also, when we came out here for the first time, every house had a bike on the front lawn, or a basketball on the porch. It just looked lived-in, like the kind of active, fun neighborhood where I’d want to live and raise kids.”

The full-length TV commercial will play during the 10 pm news on channels 2, 5, and 13 throughout the year beginning on March 21, so be sure to tune in, or if you can’t wait, just click on the links below to see them now on YouTube. There is a :30 second version, and :15 second version that is slightly different. Enjoy!

Congratulations to the newest resident TV Stars:

Editors Note: This is the first in a periodic series of posts from contributing authors who write on topics related to Daybreak. If you have an idea for a post, please email info@daybreakutah.com.

I live in Daybreak. Inevitably, when I tell anyone where I live, the question that follows is always, “How do you like it?” My answer: “Love it.” Sometimes they leave it at that and sometimes they ask what I love about it. I know you are dying to know too, right? There are a lot of things I really like about it: the colorful homes, the tree-lined streets, the quaint boutique shops and restaurants. But what I really LOVE about Daybreak is how well it not only works with, but encourages, my active lifestyle.

Picture this: a beautiful Summer morning, it’s pretty early. The kids are still in bed. I get up, throw on my running shorts over my swimsuit, lace up my shoes and I am out the door. It’s about a mile and half from my house to the pool. My ipod blasting drowns out the sounds of morning. I wave to a neighbor or two. The sun is still low in the sky. There is nothing better. On my way to the pool I pass by the lake. I take a deep breath and try to let it all sink in. At the pool I pull on my cap and goggles (super cute) and jump in. It takes my breath away for just a moment and then I’m off. I let my mind go blank for the next 750 meters (more if I’m lucky). As soon as I have accomplished my distance goal, I throw my shorts back on, still dripping wet, and push myself on the run back home. Just thinking about it makes me sigh.

My run-from-home-to-the-pool workout is one of my favorite things on earth! But there is so much more. Even in Winter (hate its guts) I can still get my fitness fix at the gym, conveniently located approximately 1.7 minutes from my house. What I love about the gym is the opposite of what I hate about gyms in general, its not a meat market! Rarely are the treadmills full and they have lots of great weights, which is perfect for me. Its so easy to get to the gym that I can run down there even when I only have half an hour to spare.

I can’t believe that I haven’t even mentioned the trail around the lake. It is a perfect 5K! My favorite running distance. I know, I’m kind of a wuss when it comes to running. I am telling you, there is nothing better than a run around the lake in the evening. Just don’t run with your mouth gaping open in case you run into a swarm of friendly neighborhood gnats (a constant companion during the early Summer in Utah)

The trail system around Oquirrh Lake is a perfect 5k

My husband and I play doubles on the tennis court for a double date with our friends. We have a kayak in the garage that we throw on top of the SUV and paddle around the lake for an hour (great arm workout). The kids find pure joy in the splash pool just down the street, and I love to get together with my old volleyball friends and attempt to relive the glory days on the sand volleyball courts. When my husband says we need to install an unsightly basketball standard in front of the house, I point him in the direction of the outdoor courts. Our family loves to ride bikes around the lake, I have a beach cruiser for just such occasions.

As far as my triathlon training, I really can’t imagine a better place to do it. I have the pool nearby, a perfect, car-free run course, and ample bike route options. “This is getting good.” Umm, yeah! Could it get any better?

Daybreak has lots of coolness to offer. But the most important to me is the way it fits my lifestyle. Plus, in the Summer time, I feel like I live on vacation. All I need is a baby sitter and I have the perfect date with my husband, a stroll to the pool and a soak in the hot tub as we watch the sun set. If you have the means, I highly recommend hooking yourself up (you like Ferris Beauler, don’t you?) I’m pretty sure, if you are into an active, healthy, totally radical lifestyle, that you will like Daybreak too.

A lot of websites show you houses for sale in Utah. You can search for homes by square footage, by number of bedrooms or by price range. But what if you’re looking at new homes in Utah and want to know which model fits your lifestyle? Is it possible to search by “first time home buyer who wants to be near restaurants but hates condos” or “empty-nesters looking for less maintenance but still enjoy a good splash in the pool?” It is possible at Daybreak; our Homefinder lets you search home collections by lifestyle. Check out the different options available:

They’re Growing Up

This lifestyle collection is aimed at growing families who find their current home bursting at the seams. Styles range from spacious townhomes all the way up to the elegant Ashcroft Premier Series.

Modern Minimal

From lofts and flats to green-built single-family homes, this collection offers clean lines and a modern feel in each home choice.

First Timers

Buying your first home is a major step in life, and having a wide selection of choices can help. Whether you’re a family of four looking for the first place to really call your own, or a successful single claiming your slice of the pie, there’s a home for you in this collection of houses.

Just for 55+

Garden Park Village is an entire community just for the grownups. It offers the best of both worlds; the private pool and community garden allow residents to enjoy swimming and gardening while the low-maintenance homes offer freedom from taxing chores. Garden Park also has easy access to the lake and SoDa Row’s shopping and dining.

And Baby Makes Three

Homes in this lifestyle collection start at two bedrooms to accommodate a new family member. Many of the choices are in Eastlake Village, which provides easy access to one of Daybreak’s three elementary schools, two sprawling parks and a long stretch of lakeshore.

Main Floor Living

Where else can you search all different types of new homes in Utah that have a main-floor master suite? From lofts to 6,000 square foot estates, each home in this collection eliminates stairs from the midnight snack equation.

Say No to Mowing

Whether you’re an 80 hours-a-week executive or a retiree looking to slow down the pace, each choice in this collection provides a low-maintenance solution to home ownership.

Urban Vibe

All of the homes in this collection are either a short walk from or actually in SoDa Row. This retail area is a colorful collection of mostly local shops and restaurants that feels like a classic neighborhood main street, but with a modern twist. Grab a croissant from Swirly Girls Gourmet Bakery before dropping the kids off at gymnastics and browsing locally-made clothing at Nappi.

Green Beans

Although all homes in Daybreak are Energy Star Certified and thus save several hundred bucks a year on utility bills, a few home collections take it even further. The Solaris Collection for example offers sustainable homes that look as good as they feel, and come standard with Solar & Thermal power sources.

Large and In Charge

Having a custom home doesn’t have to mean living in an impersonal neighborhood! Enjoy graceful living in any of the beautiful homes in this lifestyle collection while still being a part of the Daybreak community.

High-end bakery opens in the SoDa Row retail district

January 21, 2011

South Jordan, UT — Kennecott’s Daybreak community announced today the addition of Swirly Girls Gourmet Bakery to its growing list of retail establishments in its SoDa Row retail district at 11248 Kestrel Rise Road. Swirly Girls specializes in a variety of delightful desserts made from only the highest-quality ingredients including cakes, cupcakes, dessert bars, rolls, cookies, danishes, croissants, and hand-dipped chocolates.

Swirly Girls will hold a grand opening event on Saturday, January 22, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free samples, door prizes and a grand prize drawing.

The creative minds behind the bakery do not live far from their first location. Debi Jensen and Amberleigh Farrell are both Daybreak residents and friends who share a love for baking and catering. The home catering business they opened together was their first taste of success and it motivated them to expand their company.

“We are excited to open our first bakery in the Daybreak community because this is where we call home,” said Jensen. “Daybreak has all the components that we were looking for to make our business successful because it combines close proximity to shops, restaurants and amenities from residents’ homes.”

Daybreak has become very popular with home buyers and entrepreneurs because of the convenient access to businesses and amenities. This approach to community planning provides the social connections of a small town with the added convenience of reducing car trips to more distant retail destinations. The central location of SoDa Row puts neighborhood conveniences, like Swirly Girls, within a 5-minute walk for many Daybreak residents and the hundreds of people who work in the area. In addition to the Rio Tinto Regional Center, which houses more than 500 Rio Tinto employees, University of Utah Healthcare will open a new medical center later this year just two blocks away that will bring more than 300 medical professionals and hundreds more patients to the area every day that will help create a vibrant community.

“The SoDa Row retail district has become a gathering place for residents in the southwest corner of the valley,” said Kennecott Commercial Development Manager Scott Schwendiman. “People are eager to support local businesses and want unique places and products that have character. The businesses that are choosing to locate here are anxious to be part of Daybreak because of strong demographics and strong growth, and they see what is possible when quality development meets committed vision.”

Daybreak was recently recognized by the National Association of Home Builders as the national Community of the Year at their annual Best in American Living Awards (BALA), and also received a Platinum award for Smart Growth. The BALA awards recognize builders, developers, architects, and designers for their innovations in sustainable development, design, and planning that create great places to live while balancing the social, environmental, and economic needs of the community. Village Centers like SoDa Row that provide gathering places and bring everyday conveniences into the community are prime examples of smart growth planning. Daybreak was also ranked as the sixth best selling community in the most recent master planned community survey conducted by Real Estate Research firm Robert Charles Lesser & Company (RCLCO). Nearly 1 in 5 new homes in utah is built in Daybreak.

About Daybreak
Daybreak is a fresh way of thinking about community. Made up of a wide variety of energy-efficient new homes as well as shops, restaurants, offices, schools, trails, parks and more, Daybreak brings all the elements of life within easy walking or biking distance. The community is situated on 4,126 acres in South Jordan City and will eventually include as many as 20,000 homes and up to 14 million square feet of commercial space. To learn more about Daybreak, please visit www.daybreakutah.com

About Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto is a leading international mining group headquartered in the United Kingdom, combining Rio Tinto plc, a London and NYSE listed company, and Rio Tinto Limited, which is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange.
